Emerging technologies may cause profound changes in the way we live, learn, entertain, and conduct business. For a better understanding of such emerging technologies, we call them disruptive technologies. The theme is to explore the challenges and business opportunities of disruptive technologies in the fields of telecommunications, energy, biotechnologies, Information Technologies (IT), e-Business, and Chinese Computer Natural Language.
Telecommunications
With the Dense Wave-Length Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, a single optical fiber can transmit many different colors of lightwave, each color wavelength can carry a large amount of information. And Optical Cross-Connect Systems are emerging toward all optical networks. In wireless technology, the third generation or 3G wireless communications will allow a cellular phone to engage in mobile access to the Internet, enabling anytime and anywhere broadband communication.
Energy and the Environment
The guideline for energy sources has evolved from "cheap" to "safe and cheap." The environmental concern of ever increasing consumption of fossil fuel may point to further modification, to "safe, cheap, and green." An energy panel will explore what kind of technological innovation is needed to satisfy these objectives.
Biotechnologies
The recent breakthrough in sequencing the human genes has drawn much attention to many new researches and business opportunities. Genetically engineered crops could revolutionize farming. Human cloning is causing a great deal of controversy but could open doors for many new medical therapies and research.
Chinese Computer Natural Language
The Phonetic Chinese Language (PCL) System is designed to adopt Chinese to the Internet. It could substantially raise productivity for Mandarin speaking people through its mother-tongue e-mail capability.
