Dr. Victor C. Yeh
has overcome the greatest deficiency in the existing Chinese information
technology (CIT), which is the lack of a natural language computer
interface for Chinese ideograms. The Phonetic Chinese Language (PCL)
System is created as an ideal solution to this challenge. PCL, based
on tonal spelling for ideograms (in one-byte format), is the most
efficient Chinese Language-Computer Interface. In PCL, a complete
alphabetic accountability for the Chinese language has been established.
Based on a natural language interface the ideogram-spelling technique
accommodates both the simplified and the traditional script equally
well. Using a series of linguistic processes precise, concise and
unique tonal spelling for Chinese ideograms are ensured and optimized.
The resulting PCL text achieved the highest possible readability
and learnability conveying all tonal information, and intelligent
homonym resolution.
The four-dimensional
Phonetic Chinese Alphabet (PCA) is the critical
foundation needed for the success of a natural language for Chinese
computer interface. This natural language - the Phonetic Chinese
Language (PCL) - can be taught at any elementary school with our
without computer. Adoption and wide application of the PCL System
in the mainland and in Taiwan will greatly increase the national
economy and productivity. The PCL System will enable Chinese people
to compete effectively at the Internet speed in the Information
Age with all the highly developed countries.
It is clear that Dr. Yeh's
ideogram-spelling technique has overcome the current glaring deficiency
in Chinese language-computer interface. In time, the PCL System
will enable hundreds of millions Chinese using their own fluent
mother tongue to write e-mails on internet. This is analogous to
the great success in using the English language on internet enjoyed
in the United States writing four trillion emails in the year 2000.
Only by implementing the PCL System nationwide will the Chinese
economy and productivity in mainland and Taiwan be able to catch
up with the advanced nations in the world.
