Jin Wu
Distinguished Professor of Engineering
National Cheng Kung University
Dr. Wu was born in Nanjing, China, and received his high
school and college education in Taiwan and graduate studies in the
United States.
His major field of interest
is in environmental and geophysical fluid dynamics. His earlier work at Hydronautics,
Incorporated covered a variety of fundamental and applied researches. There, he established Divisions of Fluid
Motions and of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. Subsequently, he was appointed as the H.
Fletcher Brown Professor of Civil Engineering and Marine Studies at the University of Delaware; and established the
Air-Sea Interaction Laboratory. Research
in the laboratory consisted of analytical and experimental studies on all phases
of interaction processes between the atmosphere and oceans. Dr. Wu has earned many honors, including
memberships of both the Academia Sinica and the
National Academy of Engineering (United States) and National Ocean Science
Educator Awards (United States).
In l994, Dr. Wu was called
back by his alma mater to serve as the president of National Cheng Kung University. Despite a short tenure of less than two years,
he was selected as the most respected and praised university president in Taiwan. Subsequently, he served as the Minister of
Education for nearly two years, and carried out many breakthroughs in education
reforms. He was the cabinet member with
the highest approval rating, and was selected as the most influential person on
education in Taiwan for the past decade. Dr. Wu is now a professor at the National Cheng Kung University, and has established two
research centers: water resources and public policy.
